Please don’t think you can’t garden. You can. You’re probably good at it too! Here are my 2 best tips for gardening at home.

Let’s dive in. #1 tip:
Water. Yup it’s that simple.
So, you just want to dabble with gardening without committing too much time or effort. Maybe just buy a couple cute pots, fill ’em with dirt, plant a few fun things, hose ’em down and be done with it? THAT’S PERFECTLY FINE! In fact, I highly suggest it. : )
If I could make ONE suggestion above all others (fertilizer, soil type, sunlight, amendments…) it would be to get your water right.
A simple drip irrigation kit from a local home improvement store costs about $30 and takes just minutes to install. Even if you only have one plant. Seriously.
Here’s an example of the results you can expect: The nasturtium on the left has had a drip irrigation installed for a month or two delivering a trickle of water a couple times a day- totally automatic. The plant on the right, however, has been sadly relying on me to soak it with a hose whenever I get a chance. Both were planted at the same time, same sun, same soil.

Now, if you didn’t have a dripper you’d probably think you weren’t any good at this gardening thing, right?

Tip # 2:
Don’t let a dead plant or two stop you from getting what you want. Did you ride you bike on the first try? Nope. It took a few attempts with some love and encouragement. I’ve got you.
Now get out there and add that finishing touch to your beautiful patio! Get those gorgeous herbs planted! Heck, toss in a tomato plant while you’re at it! (I suggest cherry tomatoes for the best beginner success for a multitude of reasons.)

If you still feel intimidated- stroll though your local garden center to see what’s available to plant. They are stocked for the current season. Some nurseries even have a return policy so be sure to ask.
You’ve got this! XO
Need to label your herbs or get the kiddos involved? These were super fun to make. Check out this cute painted rocks tutorial.
